The past is rarely far away in East Asia. The region’s long-standing historical legacy continues to frame contemporary international relations. Issues caused by different historical perceptions, interpretations, and territorial claims have been major obstacles in the way of closer cooperation. With growing nationalism across the region, East Asia’s economic miracle risks being undone. Without resolving this historical baggage, will East Asia ever enjoy lasting peace?
