Professor of Strategic Studies, Australian National University
Prof. Peter Dean is a professor of Strategic Studies at the Australian National University and the General Sir Francis Hassett Chair of Military Studies at the Australian War College. He is concurrently a non-resident Senior Advisor for Defense Strategy with the United States Studies Centre (USSC) at the University of Sydney and a Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council. Previously, he served as Director of the Foreign Policy and Defence Program at USSC, Chair of War Studies and Director of Defence and Security Institute at The University of Western Australia (UWA), and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education) at UWA. He was the Co-Lead of Australia’s 2023 Defence Strategic Review (DSR) Secretariat in the Department of Defence (2022-2023), where he served as the senior advisor and principal author for the Independent Leads, His Excellency Professor the Hon. Stephen Smith and Air Chief Marshal Sir Angus Houston AK, AFC (Retd.). In 2024, he was the principal author of the Australian Government’s 2024 Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance Plan. He has an extensive background in strategic and defense studies, with a focus on Australia, the United States, and Northeast Asia. Prof. Dean is a former Fulbright Fellow and Endeavour Research Scholar and is an international award winning author.
