Professor, National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies
Prof. Iwama Yoko is a professor at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS). She was appointed professor at GRIPS in 2009, after having served as Associate Professor at GRIPS (2000), Special Assistant at the Embassy of Japan in Germany (1998-2000), and Research Assistant at Kyoto University (1994-1997). Her specialty is international security and European diplomatic history, with a focus on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Germany, and nuclear strategy. She has served on numerous government committees and is a regular commentator for Nikkei Shimbun, as well as a contributor of book reviews for Mainichi Shimbun. Her publications include The 1968 Global Nuclear Order and West Germany (Yuhikaku, 2021), which was awarded the 2022 Inoki Masamichi Prize of the Japan Society for Security Studies, Joining the Non- Proliferation Treaty: Deterrence, Non-Proliferation and the American Alliance (eds. Routledge, 2018), and The Realities of Nuclear Sharing: NATO’s Experience and Japan (ed. Shinzansha, 2023). Prof. Iwama graduated from Kyoto University and received her Ph.D. in Law from Kyoto University.
