On Wednesday, June 11, 2014, the Middle East and North Africa Program at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies hosted a closed roundtable with Prof. Raúl L. Madrid, Professor in the Department of Government at the University of Texas at Austin.

An expert on Latin American politics, comparative ethnic politics, and comparative social policy, Prof. Madrid is the author of The Rise of Ethnic Politics in Latin America (2012). In a presentation titled, “Immigration and Politics in the United States,” Prof. Madrid discussed how immigration is changing elections, political representation, and democracy in the United States.

mr_p.jpgRaúl L. Madrid is a Professor in the Department of Government at the University of Texas at Austin. He specializes in Latin American politics, comparative ethnic politics, and comparative social policy. His most recent work has focused on the rise of indigenous parties in Latin America and the policies and performance of leftist governments in the region.

Prof. Madrid is the author of The Rise of Ethnic Politics in Latin America (Cambridge University Press, 2012) and Retiring the State: The Politics of Pension Privatization in Latin America and Beyond (Stanford, 2003) and is a co-editor of Leftist Governments in Latin America: Successes and Shortcomings (Cambridge, 2010). His articles have appeared in Comparative Politics, Electoral Studies, Journal of Latin American Studies, Latin American Politics and Society, Latin American Research Review, Political Science Quarterly, and World Politics, among other journals. He received his B.A. from Yale University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in political science from Stanford University.



 
Jang Ji-Hyang

Principal Fellow, Director

Dr. JANG Ji-Hyang is a Principal Fellow and director of the Center for Regional Studies at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies. Dr. Jang served as a policy advisor on Middle East issues to South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2012-2018) and currently serves to Ministries of Industry, Justice, and Defense. Her research interests include political economy of the Middle East and North Africa, political Islam, comparative democratization, terrorism, and state-building. Dr. Jang is the author of numerous books and articles, including The Essential Guide to the Middle East (Sigongsa 2023 in Korean), The Arab Spring: Will It Lead to Democratic Transitions?(with Clement M. Henry (eds.), Palgrave Macmillan 2013), “Disaggregated ISIS and the New Normal of Terrorism” (Asan Issue Brief 2016), “Islamic Fundamentalism” (International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences 2008) and a Korean translation of Fawaz Gerges’ Journey of the Jihadist: Inside Muslim Militancy (Asan Institute 2011). Dr. Jang received a B.A. in Turkish studies and M.A. in political science from the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and her Ph.D. in political science from the University of Texas at Austin.
