The Asan Institute for Policy Studies co-hosted a seminar titled, “Managing ROK-US Relations” with The Korea Society on October 23, 2013 at the Korea Society in New York, and subsequently held an independent seminar of the same title on October 25 at the Stimson Center in Washington D.C.

On October 23, the seminar kicked off with welcoming remarks by Mark Minton, President of The Korea Society. In the first session, Dr. Woo Jung-Yeop, Research Fellow at the Asan Institute, delivered a presentation covering Korean public opinion on the ROK-U.S. alliance. Following Dr. Woo’s presentation, Dr. Choi Kang, Vice President of the Asan Institute, discussed the current state of ROK-U.S. relations. An active discussion on the present and future of the ROK-US relations ensued. In the subsequent session, Dr. Kim Jiyoon, Research Fellow at the Asan Institute, delivered a presentation on fluctuations in Korean domestic politics and the Korean public’s attitudes on unification and national security. Following Dr. Kim’s presentation, Dr. Mo Jongryn, Senior Research Fellow at the Asan Institute, presented on Korea’s role amidst the rapidly changing international order.

The seminar on October 25 at the Stimson Center began with the welcoming remarks by Dr. Choi and was followed by a keynote speech by Kurt Campbell, former Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs. The first part of the session consisted of a “Conversation with Kurt Campbell,” moderated by Dr. Choi. In the afternoon session, Dr. Mo delivered a presentation titled, “Korea and (the Future of) the Liberal International Order”. Finally, Dr. Kim and Dr. Woo delivered a presentation titled, “Korean Public Opinion on the ROK-US Alliance”.

Choi Kang

President

Dr. CHOI Kang is the President at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies. Previously, he was the dean of Planning and Assessment at the Korean National Diplomatic Academy. In 2012, Dr. Choi served as the president at the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS). He was also a professor and director general for American Studies at IFANS, a research fellow at the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses, and senior director for Policy Planning and Coordination on the National Security Council Secretariat. He holds several advisory board memberships including: the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Unification of the National Assembly; Ministry of National Defense; Ministry of Unification; Air Force Development Committee; and the National Unification Advisory Council. Dr. Choi was also a South Korean delegate to the Four-Party Talks. He writes extensively on the ROK-US alliance, North Korean military affairs, inter-Korean relations, crisis management, and multilateral security cooperation. Dr. Choi received his B.A. from Kyunghee University, M.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and his Ph.D. in political science from Ohio State University.

Woo Jung-Yeop

Research Fellow

Dr. Woo Jung-Yeop is a research fellow at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies. Previously, Dr. Woo was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Korean Studies Institute at the University of Southern California and also an Associate Analyst for Gallup Korea and the Korea Research Company. Dr. Woo’s research focuses on foreign military intervention in civil wars and the relationship between foreign policy-making and public opinion. Dr. Woo received a B.A. from Seoul National University, M.P.P. from Georgetown University, and his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Kim Jiyoon

Senior Fellow

Dr. KIM Jiyoon is a senior fellow in the Public Opinion Studies Program at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies. Previously, Dr. Kim was a postdoctoral research fellow at Université de Montréal. Her research interests include elections and voting behavior, American politics, and political methodology. Her recent publications include “Political judgment, perceptions of facts, and partisan effects” (Electoral Studies, 2010), “Public spending, public deficits, and government coalition” (Political Studies, 2010), and “The Party System in Korea and Identity Politics” (in Larry Diamond and Shin Giwook Eds., New Challenges for Maturing Democracies in Korea and Taiwan, Stanford University Press, 2014). She received her B.A. from Yonsei University, M.P.P. in public policy from the University of California, Berkeley, and Ph.D. in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Mo Jongryn

Visiting Research Fellow

Dr. MO Jongryn is a visiting research fellow at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies. Dr. Mo also serves as vice president for International Affairs at Yonsei University and maintains non-residence affiliations with the Hoover Institution and Stanford University. Previously, Dr. Mo was an assistant professor at the University of Texas at Austin. He is the author of Korean Political and Economic Development: Crisis, Security and Institutional Rebalancing (with Barry Weingast, 2013), The Rise of Korean Leadership: Emerging Powers and Liberal International Order (with John Ikenberry, 2013), and editor of Middle Powers and G20 Governance (2013). Dr. Mo received his B.A. in economics from Cornell University, M.S. in social science from the California Institute of Technology, and Ph.D. in political economics from Stanford University.
