The Asan Institute for Policy Studies hosted a joint workshop with the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) titled "Northeast Asia after 2012." The event took place May 16, 2011 - May 17, 2011 at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies.

Participants held an in-depth debate about how the results of the 2012 elections in South Korea, the United States, Russia, and Taiwan will affect international affairs and the security situation in Northeast Asia. They also had a scholarly conversation regarding the transition of power to the 5th generation in China, and the construction of a "powerful and prosperous nation" in North Korea.
